The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) is pleased to announce the Call for Presentations for IFMA's World Workplace 2012 Conference & Expo, held Oct. 31- Nov. 2, 2012, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, San Antonio, Texas, USA.

World Workplace 2011 attracted more than 4,300 attendees from 40 countries, more than 2,000 companies and 20 workplace-related industries.
ABOUT THE CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
In keeping with IFMA's focus on the future of facility management, World Workplace 2012 will offer an extensive educational experience to meet the growing needs of those who support managed environments. The objective of the learning experience is to offer leading FM education that helps facility teams manage, maintain and operate smarter facilities.
The theme for World Workplace 2012 is "Smarter facility management drives smart business. Come, learn, get connected." Successful submissions should include this concept in the session description and delivery.
The Call for Presentations features topic areas formerly known as "tracks," and levels of learning that will allow attendees to customize their World Workplace agenda based on their professional experience.
The call opens Jan. 9, 2012, and closes March 9, 2012, which allows two months to submit your presentation for review and consideration by the program review committee.
Important Tips for Completing the Call for Presentations
Review the online application before you complete it in order to familiarize yourself with the requested information. Be sure to note the required fields in the application, designated by an asterisk(*). You will not be allowed to submit your application unless all required fields are complete.
Gather all information needed before you begin. This is especially important if you use a dial-up Internet service. Your service may "time out" if it remains idle for a certain length of time. If this happens while you are trying to complete your application, it is possible you will lose information that has been entered.
You will have 13 topic areas to submit under for World Workplace 2012. The topic areas and descriptions are listed below. Please pre-determine which area best represents your session. If your session fits under a sub-category such as council-specific, please indicate that as well.
Type your information in a Word document prior to completing the online application. This will allow you to copy and paste large amounts of text-such as your abstract and presentation outline-from your Word document to the online application. Your Word document can also serve as your back-up copy.
Proofread what you have entered into the application. The program committee reviews your application based on the specified evaluation criteria. If your application is difficult to read due to spelling or grammatical errors, you could lose points in the Quality category.
The Call for Presentations form must be filled out completely.
The program committee has only your proposal on which to base its decision. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed or considered by the committee.
Please fill out all speaker information fields, even if you have presented at another IFMA event in the past. The program committee does not have access to your past presentation submissions. Be sure your application is complete before you hit the submit button.
Six Steps for Completing the Form
- Topic Area: Choose the topic area that most closely relates to your proposal (select one).
- Proposal Details:
- Presentation Title: Presentation Title (100 character limit, including spaces, in title case)
- Submitter's Email: The email of the actual submitter (enter your email address if you are submitting for another person). An automatic email will be sent to this address with login information.
- Select a sub-category (if applicable)
- Select a council/community sub-category
- Select the organization on behalf of which you are submitting this proposal (select one)
- Format: Choose the format that best fits your presentation (select one)
- Indicate the proposed duration of the presentation
- Four Learning Objectives: (100 character limit for each, including spaces)
- Target Audience (select one or more)
- Select the level of learning (select one)
- Speakers: Contact information, institution information, introduction/summary (no more than 150 words), presenting experience, and two (2) references An automatic email will be sent to this address with login information to all speakers.
- Abstract Text: 100-250 word summary of your presentation (3,000 character limit, including spaces)
- Presentation Outline: Include the main points you will cover during your presentation. Main points should be supported by sub-point and sub-sub-points. (3,000 character limit, including spaces)
- Confirmation: Proof your submission. If you need to make changes, please utilize the navigation links in the Proposal Control Panel, go to the appropriate step, make your changes, and click submit on the bottom of that page. An automatic email will be sent to the submitter as confirmation of receipt.
About the Evaluation Process
Comprised of distinguished industry and academic experts, members of the programme committee will evaluate each application based on the following criteria:
- Quality: The overall quality of the proposed presentation (the proposal is free of spelling errors, paragraphs are well constructed and the information provided is effectively written.
- Focus: The topic of the presentation and the learning objectives are clearly stated, the presentation focuses on a specific topic correlating to one of the educational tracks and relates to a specific aspect of the workplace.
- Application to the Profession: The presentation provides the workplace professional with useful information that can be applied upon their return to the office.
- Presentation Experience: The presenter's presentation experience is sufficient to deliver the presentation and hold the audience's attention.
- Professional Qualifications: The presenter's background, experience and professional knowledge indicate that he or she is well-qualified to deliver a presentation on the subject matter provided in the abstract. Note: Academic and Research specific papers, the blind (anonymous) evaluation of peers will dictate whether the paper is accepted. Advice and feedback from the peer reviewers may necessitate updates in your final paper.

How is your presentation valuable?
Your presentation must be relevant and contain practical information that attendees can apply in their workplaces. Determine your value proposition and suggest it in your title, state it in your objectives and support it through your narrative.
Tip: Create a clever or compelling title that piques interest and describes the value.
Why is your proposal superior?
Your proposal could possibly be competing with several comparable abstracts to be selected for presentation within the learning track and/or targeted level. Differentiate your proposal through clear objectives, strong writing, correct grammar and a professional look and feel. The quality of your proposal reflects the level of your professional standards, and the impact of an outstanding proposal cannot be overestimated.
Tip: Avoid jargon, acronyms and slang.
Why are you well-qualified to present?
Your individual qualifications as a presenter will drive your presentation's success. The description of your qualifications should address your communication skills and style, your industry and training experience, your credibility and your track record (past evaluations).
Tip: Support your expertise through third parties rather than co-presenters.
What to Expect if Your Submittal is Accepted
All abstract submitters will be notified of their final selection status via e-mail within 6 weeks of the closing deadline. If your abstract is accepted you will receive up to three complimentary speaker event registrations per session for the day you are scheduled to present and a discounted registration for any additional days you plan to attend the conference.
In return you will be expected to:
- Complete a confirmation and release form.
- Adhere to IFMA pre-determined session deliverable deadlines.
- Submit conference proceedings (6 page maximum white paper) in.pdf format to be published online for registered attendees. Note: For Academic and Research papers, peer review feedback may require updates to your paper from the originally submitted outline.
- Develop a five-question True or False test to assess the attendees' mastery of your learning objectives. Attendees seeking Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will complete the assessment after attending your session.
- Submit the Final Presentation Handout (using the World Workplace PowerPoint template) in.pdf format to be published online for registered attendees.
- Deliver an exceptional educational session at World Workplace.
Note: All presenters will be responsible for their own travel, accommodations and related expenses.
World Workplace 2012 Topic Areas and Levels of Learning
Eleven topic areas reflect facility management competencies defined by IFMA's most recent global job task analysis coupled with two new topic areas:
- Operations and Maintenance: building operations and maintenance, occupant services.
- Real Estate and Property Management: real estate planning, acquisition, disposition.
- Human Factors: healthful and safe environment, security, employee development.
- Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability: sustainable management of built and natural environments.
- Project Management: oversight and management of all projects and related contracts.
- Leadership and Strategy: strategic planning; organize, staff and lead facility function.
- Finance and Business: strategic plans, budgets, financial analyses, procurement.
- Quality: best practices, process improvements, audits and measurements.
- Communication: communication plans and processes for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Technology: facility management technology, workplace management systems.
- Emergency Preparedness and Business Continuity: emergency and risk management plans, procedures.
- NEW Academic & Research: This area focuses on leading academic topics and research in the area of facility management. Submissions will be subject to blind peer review and feedback.
- NEW FM Solutions: This new topic area is specifically designed for IFMA Corporate Sustaining Partners (CSP's) only. Non CSP's will NOT be considered. This new area allows CSP's an avenue to educate FM's on cutting edge product options and solutions.
Submittal sub-categories further assist the program committee and staff in placing and marketing selected sessions in specific areas of focus.
In addition to topic areas, sessions will also be categorized by new levels of learning. Attendees will have the ability to plan their educational program based on their unique experience.
- 100 level: Sessions geared toward new or emerging facility professionals with less than two years of experience.
- 200 level: Sessions geared toward facility professionals with two to five years of experience — perfect for credentialed or aspiring Facility Management Professionals (FMP®), Certified Facility Managers® (CFM®) and Sustainability Facility Professionals (SFP).
- 300 level: Sessions geared toward facility professionals with more than five years of experience — perfect for credentialed or aspiring Facility Management Professionals (FMP®), Certified Facility Managers® (CFM®) and Sustainability Facility Professionals (SFP).
