2.03 Building Your Professional Presence: The FM's Guide to Looking Like You’ve Got What it Takes

Wednesday, April 11, 2012
1:30 PM-2:30 PM
Track Topic Area: Leading and Managing/Volunteer Leaders
Format: General Presentation
Organization: IFMA
Knowledge Level: 200 level
Session Description: We know facility professionals bring unique knowledge and expertise to an organization; now it’s time to pay serious attention to the packaging! If facility managers are to move into the executive suite, they need to look and act like they belong there. You don’t put someone who speaks or dresses like a tow truck driver in a corner office any more than you put someone there without the education and experience to do the job. Let's get real about appropriate and professional attire, a command of language and business etiquette, superior relationship building, and rock-solid integrity. Quite frankly, what you do and how you appear is almost as important as who you are and what you know. A large number of senior executives will tell you that the image they project and their ability to communicate contribute significantly to their career movement and salaries; and if you've really got what it takes on the inside, you need to showcase it on the outside!
Learning Objectives:
  • Recognize the role of perception as the communicator of value.
  • Evaluate the message you are sending in image and behavior.
  • Exhibit the characteristics of a person of influence.
  • Assess your internal compass: character matters.
