8.02 In-sourcing High Performance Operations: Engineering Tool Kits and Training

Thursday, April 4, 2013
9:15 AM-10:15 AM
Track: Sustainability/ Environmental Stewardship
Format: Workshop
Knowledge Level: 200 level
Session Description: To achieve high performance operations in commercial buildings, many owners and operators use external parties to facilitate technical processes such as energy auditing and ventilation testing, but remain disengaged from the process themselves. Even those building engineers who work with building systems every day typically lack the right tools to engage in energy efficiency and LEED-EBOM certification activities successfully. Reversing this trend and bringing the tools and training to empower building engineers to manage for sustainability and high performance will yield deeper, institutionalized, longer lasting results.

This session will explore a new approach to high-performance operations and LEED-EBOM certification, which creates a more permanent culture of sustainability and provides building engineering staff with the right tools and training to become their own high performance project managers. This scalable system includes staff trainings on LEED-EBOM certification and green building management practices, as well as the toolkits and worksheets that let building staff manage two of the most complicated parts of LEED-EBOM certification: energy auditing and ventilation documentation. In addition to discussing the step-by-step process, we will highlight a case study that showcases the successful implementation of the approach in a large commercial real estate firm.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand when building engineers are disconnected from high-performance O&M and LEED-EBOM processes.
  • Learn which elements of a buildings O&M are critical to high performance but generally unaddressed by staff.
  • Understand which tools can help building engineers and operators to perform these functions in-house.
  • Understand what level of training is required to make this transition successful.
