05-Sep-13, 11:15-12:00
Grand Ballroom I,II,III (Shanghai Marriott Hotel Hongqiao)
Track: Leadership and Strategy
Format: General Presentation
Organization: IFMA
Knowledge Level: 200 level
Session Description: The facility management profession is practiced in many different ways around the world. Regardless of the region, the profession is defined by a number of common core competencies that define the knowledge, skills and abilities of the facility manager. These core competencies form the framework for career development, from maintenance technician to facility executive, and in specialty areas such as sustainable facility management. Knowledge of these core competencies and professional experience in facility management can be earned and demonstrated through education and credentialing programs. The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) has created a series of educational offerings and credentials that help facility managers demonstrate their competence. IFMA has outlined the baseline education and credentialing programs that can be supplemented by local and regional practices to produce a viable career path that is adaptable to any region or economy in the world. This presentation will outline the strategy and major efforts of IFMA and the Macao Institute of Management in developing a career framework and recognition program for facility management.
Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss the evolution of the FM career and IFMA's competency-based education and credentialing process.
  • Understand how to match a global FM career approach with China's growing needs for facility management.
  • Discuss the critical success factors for introducing facility management to meet China’s career recognition need.
